Verthara Lightning Decor: Illuminate Your Space in Style

Verthara Lighting: Illuminate Your Space in Style

Verthara stocks lighting for every room in a UK home — ceiling lights, pendant lights, wall sconces, floor lamps, table lamps, and outdoor fittings — because different rooms and different activities have different lighting requirements. This guide introduces our range and explains what to look for in each category.

Ceiling lights and pendant lights

The ceiling fitting is the starting point for most rooms. For rooms with standard UK ceiling heights (2.4m), flush and semi-flush fittings work best in walkable spaces — they sit close to the ceiling and leave adequate headroom. Pendant lights work well over fixed surfaces: a dining table, a kitchen island, a reading corner.

Choosing the right size matters more than most guides acknowledge. A ceiling fitting that's too small for the room looks like a placeholder rather than a choice. For a flush fitting in a living room up to 15m², aim for 35–50cm in diameter. For a pendant over a dining table, roughly half the table width. When in doubt, go one size up — the most common error in UK homes is a fitting that disappears against the ceiling of an average-sized room.

Wall lights and sconces

Wall lights add light at eye level and below, which creates a completely different quality from overhead sources — warmer, more directional, and better for the kind of atmosphere that ceiling fittings struggle to produce. They work best as part of a layered scheme rather than as the sole light source in a room.

The standard mounting height is 150–170cm from the floor. The tendency is to mount wall lights too high — at 185–200cm — where they illuminate the ceiling rather than the room. At the correct height, a wall sconce either side of a bed replaces bedside table lamps entirely; one in a hallway at 160cm creates a welcome that a ceiling fitting can't replicate.

Rechargeable battery-powered wall lights need no wiring and mount with two screws — a practical option for renters and for rooms where running cables isn't feasible. Browse the full wall lights collection including rechargeable wall sconces.

Floor lamps and table lamps

Floor lamps and table lamps are the most flexible light sources in a home — repositionable, no installation required, and available in a range of outputs from purely decorative to genuinely useful task lighting. An arc floor lamp behind a sofa provides reading light at the right angle without occupying floor space in front of the seating; a table lamp on a side table provides ambient warmth at a height that a ceiling fitting can't reach.

For UK homes in winter, when it's dark by 4pm for months at a stretch, having lamps that come on in the afternoon without turning on an overhead is the most significant comfort difference between a well-lit home and an adequately lit one. Two or three well-positioned lamps in a living room, on a timer or switched on at the same time each afternoon, change the experience of the room considerably.

Outdoor lighting

Outdoor wall lights rated IP44 or IP65 are relevant for most UK homes — we have around 180 dark evenings per year, which makes outdoor lighting a practical rather than decorative purchase. An IP65-rated wall light beside the front door provides security lighting and a welcoming entrance. Garden and patio lighting extends how long you can use outdoor space through spring and autumn.

IP44 is the minimum for covered outdoor areas and for fittings in bathroom Zone 2. IP65 is required for exposed outdoor areas where the fitting will be rained on directly. For a fitting above a sheltered porch, IP44 is adequate; for a gate post or open garden wall, IP65. Browse outdoor wall lights and IP65 rated fittings.

What's the difference between IP44 and IP65 for outdoor lights?

IP44 means the fitting is protected against solid objects over 1mm and water splashing from any direction. Adequate for covered outdoor areas. IP65 means additional protection against water jets — required for exposed outdoor locations that will be rained on directly. When in doubt for an outdoor fitting, choose IP65.
